Agriculture in Nepal

The agriculture sector has been the backbone of the Nepalese economy in terms of income, employment, and livelihood. As per the Labor Force Survey 2021, 50.4 percent of the population of Nepal is engaged in agriculture contributing to around 24 percent of the GDP in fiscal year 2022/23. Despite half of the population’s dependency on agriculture, the farmers and producers face difficulties in operation due to lack of adequate capital base, technology, information, and knowledge regarding marketing and opportunities.

The major obstacle in the domestic agriculture supply chain in Nepal is the lack of proper logistic infrastructure, making it challenging to link farmers to markets. There is no link between the producers and consumers so the concept of demand and supply is foreign in Nepalese agriculture. Small farmers are the most affected ones because most of the time harvesting cost, transportation cost, and other costs are mainly borne by the farmers. Along with infrastructure gaps, packaging and goods handling are also causing gaps in the supply chain. Poor post-harvest handling and lack of proper packaging result in substantial loss of the produce before they reach markets. Grading and processing of the locally produced products is also a challenge at present. Because of these challenges farmers are unable to bargain a better price for their products in Nepal.

Despite all these challenges, the land of Nepal has a huge potential to produce the best products. As the world is being more conscious about the product we consume, Nepalese agriculture has an opportunity to add this practice to its advantage. Fresh Doko is a small initiative to help local farmers leverage on this opportunity, to connect farmers with the conscious consumer through sustainable and eco-friendly products that are equally beneficial to everyone involved with it.
